When in 1949 the Dutch East Indies became independent of the Netherlands, forming Indonesia, New Guinea was kept outside of the sovereignty agreement. After 1949 aircraft in Netherlands New Guinea flew with (Dutch) PH-markings, but in 1954 it was decided to form a separate aircraft register, introducing the JZ- prefix. First entires in the register (JZ-PAA and PAB) were on 5.12.1954.
